What Is a Torrent

You have undoubtedly heard about this term, or at least seen it on the Internet, but could you explain it to your friend what exactly is a torrent? Let me try to explain it.

What is a torrent

What Is a Torrent?

Torrent is a pointer file which contains metadata information of digital contents, ranging for example from TV shows, documents, and other sorts of things you can download through the Torrent client, which allows users to download torrent files right to their computers. It is a file created by the BitTorrent file-sharing protocol, which uses URLs of torrent trackers.

What Is the Difference Between the Torrent and Torrenting?

Now, if you know what torrent means, it will be simple to understand what torrenting is. It is a process of downloading torrent files by using a BitTorrent protocol and a Torrent client.

How Does the Torrent Works?

It works based on the peer-to-peer file sharing, which means that the user, who gives data, is known as the seed, and the user who downloads is known as the peer. Thanks to the  BitTorrent protocol, you are downloading the original file from the source and the other users at the same time, which makes the whole process fast and smooth.

For example, if my friend is the first one who has downloaded a document through a torrent, and I want that document too, part of the data will be given to me by the source, and piece of it by himself as well.

Where Can I Find Torrents?

There are many legal websites for downloading torrents you can choose from, but I will mention at least a few of them. Don’t worry about security because everything is 100% legal. One of many websites for downloading torrents is Legit Torrents with more than 3 700 torrents; Internet Achieve with a massive database of software or books; Vodo for free streaming, or Miro Guide, which allows you to play their content directly.

How Can I Download Torrents?

When you have finally selected a torrent, you need to know how to download it. Unfortunately, you can not download it like any other file as you usually do, but you need a unique computer program. All you have to do is to choose one of the BitTorrent clients, that require a link to the torrent file, and these are available on the Internet. There are many of them you can choose, so here are my top 3 options, which I am using the most:

  • Bitport – it is a torrent downloader based on a cloud, and it has support for media devices like Chromecast, Roku or Apple TV. The only disadvantage may be the limited storage space (1GB) if you don’t want to pay for the Premium plan, but if you don’t mind to spend at least $5 per month, you will appreciate many offered features.
  • qBittorrent – is a torrent software with great popularity because it’s free, even though the interface may seem a bit outdated.
  • uTorrent – is another favourite torrent client. It has been lately criticised for many advertisements displayed, but it still offers many useful features. But if you want the best features available, you would have to pay for the Premium plan as well.

Is It Safe?

Even though torrents are legal, it has been lately related to the illegal activities because of some users who have been sharing pirated content. Before starting to download, make sure you are downloading legal torrent content from sites that provide torrents legally.

There is no guarantee of safe downloading because the other peers will be able to see your IP address while torrenting. If you want to protect yourself, you can try connecting your computer to a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which allows you to change your IP address, so that you can download torrents anonymously.

The best option you can choose is to use the BitTorrent client or a Cloud torrent downloader, and if you want to be 100% sure, pay for their Premium plan because your downloads go through their SSL secured channel, and even your ISP can’t see what you are downloading.

Make a choice and enjoy your torrenting!
